The History Lessons from the DVD booklets have already told us how the Holy Britannian Empire came to be, actually. The Britannian monarchs are supposedly descendants of Alwin I, a Celtic tribes leader of some sort who rebelled against Julius Caesar's invasion. I say "supposedly" because Lelouch himself states that this was added later by Ricardo Van Britannia I (the first Britannian Emperor) to justify his ascension to the throne after the Tudor line died out. Alwin I may not actually have existed.
I'm still not sure what the deal is with the a.t.b. calendar (Ascension Throne Britannia), which appears to be the Gregorian calendar in disguise (Washington's rebellion also happened around the 1770's a.t.b.) What are all the other countries in Code Geass using, anyway? Gregorian?

I highly suggest reading this thread if you want to know even more about Britannian history, specifically the founding of Britannia. Lelouch is playing Suzaku's study mate yet again.
