Mayu is an adult Setsuna respects but still feels like he can be his usual self around. This basically means that when he is doing something stupid, he will :( if Mayu calls him on it because he cares what she thinks. Most adults he just ignores. At the same time, he will joke around with her more casually than other adults.

Long and short is that it is very very difficult for a born rebel like Setsuna to understand the bond. To him, it smacks of control and Setsuna instinctively recoils and wants to yank others back with him -- that's the protector in him. It does not help that Akito comes across as a charismatic psycho to him, which pings his grr rociel buttons and makes him more hostile than he would normally be. He doesn't like at all that Akito's arrival has made Hatori act differently, down to pushing the people he cares about away. He is upset about Mayuko and Hatori as well. All of this comes at a bad time for Setsuna since he was just getting over the loss and realizations associated with Kira. So having people push him away just makes him want to cling even tighter because, as he said, he's scared. So his reaction to Hatori is of a somewhat selfish flavor, both in not wanting to lose Hatori and in wanting Hatori to not hurt the people important to him by pushing them away.
Setsuna honestly DOES NOT WANT TO UNDERSTAND because this is not ok to him. And it makes him continuously angry and melancholy. As I said to Kino, he would like nothing more than to beat the living snot out of Akito right now for "causing this mess." But he also cares about upsetting Hatori so he "plays nice." Accepting things is kind of out of the picture for Setsuna because of everything else and he is likely to just get more hurt until he figures things out better. But when push comes to shove, Setsuna will probably end up most upset with himself. Temporarily though, he's doing slightly better as Mika smacked him around for a bit and that tends to work better than just talking for Setsuna. But he is still overall shaky.
