He stares harder at the open curse book at his side, as if he could will the words to stop swimming together in his head. Thus far, he has managed little success.]

Hardly a coincidence... Were they killed while writing in it or immediately after, when they tried to leave it?

I don't believe that they were killed — perhaps some were, but not the individual I spoke with. He said that the longer they communicated, the more agitated the spirit became until it snapped. Immediately thereafter, he said that he felt a sharp pain and that he had suffered a deep cut around his neck. The book itself had disappeared.

Why would they keep communicating with a bothered spirit? They know this place better than that.
